Shopping

Nearest small market town, with a good range of shops, (mini supermarket, butcher, post office, chemist's) and restaurants is Duravel (5 minutes drive through the woods). Fumel (7 minutes drive) has larger supermarkets and more facilities.

And don't miss out on the lively weekly markets in all the local villages selling the melons, strawberries, grapes, soft goat's cheeses (cabécous), fatted duck products (including foie gras and magrets) and wines - to name but a few - for which this gastronomic area is justly famous.

Street markets

Markets large and small are a fun way to shop – invariably colourful and bustling with locals as well as tourists. They usually start early and finish at 12 noon sharp, but in the summer months may go on a little later. Ask about increasingly popular evening markets, often with live music, which many villages are now organising. Meanwhile here is a list of regular markets within easy reach of Cubertou, all in places well worth a visit…

Food shops are, however, usually open on Sunday morning (particularly boulangeries and pâtisseries for the Sunday treat…)

Plastic bags

Most supermarkets no longer give out flimsy plastic bags, but invite you to buy a sturdier version which they will replace free if and when it fails or wears out.

Recycling bins

Communes can be penalized if their residents fail to respect recycling guidelines:

  1. glass bottles and jars in special “glass only” bins (recup’verre)
  2. cartons, tins, plastic bottles, cardboard, newspapers & magazines (but no glass or polystyrene) loose in recycling bins (recyclables)
  3. all perishables and other household waste bagged in non recycling bins (déchets ménagers)
If in doubt, bag and bin with general waste.
